I enjoyed reading this first-in-series book--seeing the details of historical life in Scotland and in Nova Scotia. The characters were all likable and my heart went out to the family when terror and tragedy sets in. It was heart-warming to see the family love and the honor in sticking together for the family's sake. I'm anxious for the next book so I can find out which of Muirne's suitors will win her heart.

One needs to only read the author's short bio to get a feel for what one is in store for with The Keening as you will indeed be "transported to a different time and place." One is instantly spellbound by the rich and vivid details of a world that is both heart wrenching and incredibly beautiful at the same time. The lives of the MaClean family are fully developed and we become fully invested in their plight as they struggle to overcome the troubles of life in 1800 Scotland. The magic and mastery of Miss Pinard's incredible grasp of history and her passion for the world she has created will be a delight for readers of all ages and will have us all yearning for what is to come in the next installments.
This novel will leave you wanting more. The rich and colorful language of the landscape and characters really makes the reader feel like they are right there throughout the whole story. You absorb what each character feels through the twists and turns of the plot. And the author obviously knows Scotland and its history--but makes it accessible and interesting to anyone.

From the first pages, you immediately sense that the story is going to be full of surprises. The author does a beautiful job blending hope and despair as the characters face a world of unknown challenges and opportunities. At it's core, this novel is completely relatable--the reader realizes that, despite best efforts, the world is full of forces beyond one's control. Yet lingering throughout the story is perseverance, triumph, and survivalism in each of the character's lives. The author brings a mature writing style and the magic of the unknown.

Great book for a plane ride or quiet evening. I'm already getting some copies as gifts!
From page one, I was hooked. I've had a rough year, and reading has fallen by the wayside. Margaret's book was worth taking time from my busy and exhausting life for. Every chapter pulled me further into a time in history I knew little about. Ms. Pinard's vivid imagery and strong prose brought the characters and setting to life, but didn't weigh the story down with descriptions. The dialogue was time appropriate, which, though it shouldn't be, is refreshing for the historical fiction I've been exposed to. By the end of the book, I knew and loved each character so much that I feel I could predict their actions in situations. That alone had me anticipating the second installment of the Remnants series, Grasping Roots (which has an incredible opening sentence). I can't wait to follow the characters through their journey and struggles.

Do yourself a favor and get immersed in Margaret's world. Thank me later.
The Keening is a compelling story of a working class family's struggle to stay together and thrive through tumultuous times and increasingly challenging circumstances. The characters are well crafted, though I would not have been bored by a little more detail to their individual character. Ms Pinard's knowledge of the subject matter and brisk movement through the story make it a fast paced read, but engrossing. I really had to make myself put it down when the pesty necessities of my own life interfered. I only have two " wishes" in regards to The Keening. One is that I wish the author had resisted the omnipresent advice to edit ruthlessly and Indulged in some more descriptive prose around the characters as individuals, even some of the supporting ones, and their movements and situations. I really feel her writing is strong and engaging enough that this book would have read beautifully at four or even (maybe?) five hundred pages. My second wish is that I would have discovered it when the sequel was already published because I had my finger ready for the buy now button! I hope it's coming soon!
The Keening by Margaret Pinard is a historical fiction story about a Scottish family and their trials and tribulations in the 1800's. The writing flowed well and led me to be engaged in seeing what would happen next. In fact, at the end I was left with wanting to get Book 2 right away! The title is interesting and so I wasn't sure what it meant but by the end of the story you'll see how it pulls together (no spoilers here!). I enjoyed this story and can honestly say I learned something about the time period as well from the descriptions and narratives- a win-win for a reader.
I found this book really enjoyable as did my family members. I loved the characters and the way they moved through the story. I am looking forward to the next volumes.
Pinard has reached her stride! This book sings with the winds of Scotland to the chill of Nova Scotia. My husband and I, both retired English teachers, thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the second in this emerging series.
