AIRBORNE was about a verrrry unique paranormal character. I couldn't quite believe it when I first read it. I was all like, "He's a WHAT!?"

Avery lives in Alaska and goes to a boarding school where she pretty much only has one friend. She goes over the summer to visit her brother, Chase, in California. While there, she picks up a strange stone on the beach. Immediately, the stone disinigrates and as the weeks go by, a black mark on her arm begins to grow. And grow.

Her first night back at school in Alaska, a very tall boy knocks on her dorm door and asks her to take a walk with him. So a stranger knocking on her dorm door at night for a walk in the woods all alone? Yes, I will go with you! Smart girl that Avery is, she stops before they go out the exit door, but he just pushes her out. Very tall and strong, yes?

Come to figure out, the stone she found wasn't really a stone. It was a special amulet for a HARPY PRINCE! In case y'all don't know like I didn't, a harpie is a winged creature in Greek mythology mostly known for snatching food from Phineas.

Most of the story is about Avery and Mason (the harpy who showed up) trying to figure out how to get the magic out of her, why the magic is IN her in the first place, and how to get away from all the different groups of people and non-people who are after them.

I have two main issues with this book. The first is that I really think this author should invest or find a friend they trust or something to be their editor. There were many grammatical errors. Those always catch my eye, so maybe it wasn't too noticeable, but I believe it would still be a good thing to do. The author's writing does have talent and promise.

The next thing is that I think she should explain why the harpy is the only mythological creature in the book. Out of all of Greek mythology, the harpy (whom no one has really heard of, I dare say) is the one who exists. None of the others. Maybe the harpies made up all of the other legends to throw off the humans' trail? We don't know yet. We just know that harpies exist, but no other mythological creatures.

All in all, it was enjoyable. Very easy read. (:

This is a must read!
Honestly, this book could have been so much better. The story was great, and something that I have never read about before. The writing on the other hand was less than par, and the utter lack of commas had me squirming the entire read. Still, I'm not one to give up on a series, and I liked it just enough to want the next book in the saga.
I had no idea what a harpie was - till reading this book. It was a nice change from all the other books that are out there. More substance and a little history/mythology thrown in. I felt a good connection to the characters, there were a few little bumps (grammer and such) but nothing that would drive you crazy. The plot had a good flow and it wasnt hard to keep up with the twists and turns where some books leave you wondering 'what the heck? where did that come from'. I will definately be on the look out for the next book.
I would call Airborne, a self-published novel by Constance Sharper, a young-adult urban fantasy. It's about a high school girl who finds herself in the midst of a war between supernatural creatures.

At this point you're probably thinking, I've read this book. When I picked it up and started it I thought the same thing. This is not the same book. For one thing, the locality is much different. We start in Alaska, an unforgiving and to most of us, alien landscape. This might not be true for people who live there, but just that setting gave me a sense of urgency about the book. Being outside isn't just against the rules, it's dangerous. In an ordinary book, the 'walking' portions, where you're getting your character A to point B are sometimes grueling or if the author is smart, skipped over as quickly as possible. In this landscape it becomes a place to try our character against obstacles that are realistic and help us get a better sense of them.

Then there's the white bird in the room. Oh, wait, it's a harpy. Yes, there are harpies, and they are everything you imagine harpies to be. Everything I imagined harpies to be, at least. Being-harpy is a very important part of their character and how they view the world, and I appreciate this a lot because harpies are so... Well, they're not vampires. And they're not used in this book as vampire/werewolf/sparkle bunny analogs. They're very much themselves and very new feeling. I love them.

Honestly, this is a great book, and I couldn't find anything wrong with it. If there's a reason I'm not bouncing off the walls for the sequel, it's because I'm just not at a point right now where I'm interested in another YA fantasy. However, our main character is in her senior year at the beginning of this novel, so maybe the next novel will transcend the high school scene and I won't have to worry about it.
