Dream Boy Madelyn Rosenberg Mary Crockett 9781402295836 Books

I initially ordered and read "Dream Boy" because one of the authors was a professor at my college. I was so glad I did! This is a terrific Young Adult novel that will appeal to adults as well as teens. It has a little bit of something for everyone. There is paranormal horror, there is romance, there are fantastic evolutions in family and friend relationships. The authors have a voice that will engage readers and keep them reading; I could not put the book down, because I had to know what would happen next (specifically, before I went to sleep and dreamed that my dreams might come to life...)

While there is a trend towards the creepy and paranormal in YA literature these days, something I really loved about "Dream Boy" was the way in which the characters problem solved and developed theories about what could and could not happen when dreams came to life. There was a perfect balance of teen drama, meaningful philosophizing, and real-life challenges. I will be re-ordering this fantastic book as a gift several times in the near future!

Dream Boy Madelyn Rosenberg Mary Crockett 9781402295836 Books Reviews

Not exactly what I expected
Bought this book for my 1 3yrs old daughter, she love it!
I love a good young adult read and this one had all the elements for a perfect read. I enjoyed getting into the minds and antics of teenagers while entering into a world that I never could have imagined. Thanks for the good summer read get-away.
This story wasn't a disappointment but it wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. I'm a little upset about that but at least it wasn't a total waste!

Summary Like everyone else Annabelle Manning dreams. And she dreams of the perfect guy her dream boy. But unlike everyone else one day a guy that looks just like her dream guy shows up at her school. Now she has to figure out if it's a coincidence or is it her dream boy for real. And if it is him how did he get there and does she have to worry about other dreams coming true?

Character(s) The characters were a bit blah ... they weren't that exciting to me. Maybe it's because I had really high expectations for this book but I can't pick a favorite character. Annabelle was a good main character but I just didn't find anything that special about her that made her stand out from everyone else. You know besides being the Dreamer with a capital D (I didn't make it up that's what it says in the story)!

Writing The writing was good. It really pulled me in at the beginning and the chapters were perfect. They weren't so long to the point that I thought the book would last forever. I did find a couple of errors but other than that the writing was good.

Overall Like I said I had high expectations for this story and I think that's what ruined it for me. But I'm glad I read it because the story is very original. I don't know if this will be a series or not but if it is I might continue with it.
A tale well-plotted and beautifully wordsmithed. Uniquely clever fantasy world grounded in emotions and experiences to which any young adult can relate. Didn't want it to end!
The "Dream Boy" of the title who inexplicably shows up as another student at the high schooi of the girl who dreamed him is an attention-grabbing concept all by itself but, by the time you begin to get used to whatever is going on there, the authors crank it up to a scary level rivaling the "Body Snatchers" of Jack Finney (and Kevin McCarthy!) where you can never be sure what's what or who's who. Plus, the book has one of the creepiest villainesses to be found anywhere. It's fun seeing how school friends (and some not-so-friendly) finally unite to take on this threat from a distant dreamscape, and the surprises keep piling up right through the last page.
I’m a friend of one of the authors, Mary Crockett. As a result of that friendship, I ordered Dream Boy, and read it mainly over a weekend.

Mary Crockett not only is an award-winning poet, but also someone who has lived “a lot of life” as they say. This is the first work of fiction of hers that I’ve read, and her fine writing brings out the wisdom that she’s gleaned from growing up looking at life from the outside in. Even though as a middle-aged father I’m not exactly the target audience for this book (OK not by a long shot), I’ve learned something from it. Also, it’s reminded me that my daughter will grow up soon enough, although I can’t quite get used to her yearning for a kiss with “a touch of tongue” as Annabelle, the main character, would.

As other reviewers have noted, this is a fast-paced thriller with many twists and turns. But I believe that the introspective moments really set this book apart. In particular, they will sound familiar to young adults with the capacity to see the often weird interconnections among persons, places, and situations that shape perception. They are the dreamers who often get lost in our communities because the explosion of beauty that they see overwhelms their capacity to express it. That is, until they find their voice or a medium to do so.

I also enjoyed Dream Boy for its references to a beautiful part of Virginia, and because I still fondly remember a stinky little dog that somehow squirmed its way into this book. Order it now and you’ll understand what I mean.
