We all bring the books that we have read before to the books we read now. I am certainly no different. So when I say that this book felt like a loving homage to Trouble and Her Friends, with a flip of Fool's War, please understand it that is a commendation.
"A holstered equation hung at his hip, and his pockets were heavy with binary. His eyes lighted as they fastened on the bartender, and he came up against the brass rail like a knife against a butcher's steel while patrons turned to look, and just as quickly turned away."

Jenny Casey is an adult, with all the history and troubles and responsibility implied in that. She has things that she needs to do, and she hurts when she wakes up in the morning, and she has to choose a lot of least-bad options. I loved Jenny Casey and her hardscrabble life.
"You were right. I didn't want to know. Because every girl dreams of growing up to share her highly augmented brain with an Artificial Intelligence of Opposite Gender. I drift off to sleep wondering how the Census would abbreviate that."

Jenny needs to use her connections and contact and history and every bit of her wit and rebuilt body to try and maintain the fragile status quo of her world. Of course, as in any novel, normal is a place you can never get back to again, but Jenny can TRY. She can dungeon crawl with her gang-boss friend, and scheme with or against the doctor who rebuilt her, and have extremely complicated family history. She can feed stray cats and take care of kids, but her world is not stable, no matter what she wishes. Poor Jenny. Lucky us.

Read if: You are always on the lookout for books with adult protagonists. You have fond memories of early cyberpunk books. You like retired-vet stories and/or criminal conspiracies.

Skip if: You are looking for a shiny pretty future. You want big-scale politics, ala Starship Troopers.

What I loved about this book was the ruggedness of the main character, an older, grizzled, in-pain, cranky, ex-military woman who takes no crap from anybody. The life she's built for herself is unbelievably hard, and her moral choices are amazing.
I plan to read more works by this author once I recover.
I have not read the remaining two books in the trilogy yet. This book appears to largely serve to set up the players and develop their characters - there is enough mystery is left to the imagination and action to keep you interested though!
Elizabeth Bear's "Hammered" (first of three) is (dare we say it?) post-cyberpunk. Yes, the enhancements, the virtual reality, the AIs, are here. The street punks and the cops are here. The bullets fly. But where are the product placements and the Raymond Chandler homages?

Not here. And probably that's a good thing. The author has a jangly muti-pov prose style (each mini-chapter begins with a place, date, and time-military, cyber, or traditional, depending), with her wisecracky heroine, Jenny Casey, telling her story in the first person, while the other characters have theirs told in the third. And Jenny's quite a heroine she's in the grand new tradition of Catherine Asaro's Soz Valdoria and Kristine Smith's Jani Killian. When we meet her, she's living in a bummed out section of Hartford, CT (of all places), approaching 50, and with her cyber-enhancements wearing out. She's an ex-warrant officer in the Canadian Army, and of course she gets pulled back in, and she gets put back together, so she can embark on future adventures.

This volume serves as a scene-setter and character-introducer, but there's plenty of action, and the characters are interesting. Wait till you get a load of the AI!

Notes and asides. If there are previews of the next book in the series at the back of the one you have in your hands, then it's highly unlikely to be complete in itself. And this one isn't.
Usually, it annoys the heck out of me when a book ends on a cliffhanger, but this time, I'm thanking my foresight for purchasing the next two in the series.
This book requires the reader to do a little more work than many. That is part of what makes it more satisfying. The variety of characters and perspectives doesn’t hurt a thing.
First read this book when it came out ten years ago. It is a good representative of its type. Damaged earth after global warming becomes reality with Canada a major power north of a fragmented US. The characters are interesting with good back stories. We have a race to master alien technology to save humanity and Canada has Jenny a scared veteran who may be the only one able to fly a ship built with alien plans.Good round story with a good led to next volume in series.
Bear has a solid story, and even though she seems to have dumped all the hot topics and buzzwords from recent sci-fi into this story, she does get them aligned in a logical and coherent whole. The downfall is the occasionally leaden dialog. Some lines I can buy. Others, well... you honestly have to wonder if any of her editors, teachers, early readers, anyone, ever bothered to tell her she should read dialog out loud (interesting, when you read her description of herself on ). And that's my main gripe. Luckily, the story was good enough for me to overlook the stretches of poor writing. I was thinking a 3-star rating, but the second book is a bit better, so I gave her 4.

I think one of the reasons I enjoyed it is because Casey and her story remind me of the days when I discovered William Gibson. The down and dirty street life Casey and Razorface have, the seedy and decrepit future-tech, the assassins for hire, the reject from the good life trying to do the right thing despite circumstances, etc. all remind me of early Gibson in a good way.
